Rough and ready, the Rockwell Collins IPC-8600A is a General Purpose Processing Unit (GPPU) consisting of a Video Processing Module (VPM) and a Power and Switch Module (PSM). It provides mission computing, network data management and video switching functions suitable for fixed and rotary wing aircraft. The GPPU conforms to Collins Flight2? open architecture, which maximizes commercial open standards, Commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware, and incorporates a high integrity ethernet switch and POSIX compliant, partitioned commercial operating system with modular-layered software architecture.

The VPM-8600A contains a high-performance Video Processing System (VPS) that accepts five RS-170 analog video inputs and five SMPTE-292 (HDTV) digital video inputs, and provides six SMPTE-292 digital video outputs. The PSM-8600 includes a 16 port high integrity ethernet switch supporting 1 and 100baseT data communications, a powerPC based general purpose processor, and integrated graphics engine with SMPTE-292 digital video output.
